PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida women's basketball team dominated Lee defensively in the first half and held off the Flames comeback in the second half to pick up a 58-52 win Saturday afternoon at the UWF Field House.
UWF (7-1, 4-0 GSC) recorded seven blocks, five steals and held the Flames (5-2, 2-2) to a 14.3 shooting percentage in the first half to lead 26-13 at halftime and never trailed in the second half to remain undefeated in the Gulf South Conference.
"I challenged our players to play great defense tonight," said UWF coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. "Lee is a team that can put a lot of points on the board. They're averaging 70 a game. They shoot the three very well. We played a very talented team tonight."
Lee is a former NAIA powerhouse which went 25-6 overall and 18-2 in its first provisional season in the GSC last year. It is in its second year of provisional membership as it transfers to NCAA Division II.
UWF freshman
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala./Sparkman HS) recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and
Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek HS) scored 11 points with four blocks, four assists and two steals. UWF totaled 11 blocks and seven steals as a team but shot just 23.8 percent from the field.
"Our offense didn't shoot the ball well," Yelton said. "We were able to pull this game out because we played tenacious defense. We made buckets when we needed them, and we made free throws when we needed them."
UWF is off to its best start in GSC play since the 2005-06 season. UWF won its first GSC Tournament title in school history last season but started just 2-2 in conference play.
UWF travels to Mississippi College and Delta State Dec. 18 and 20 for its final contests before the New Year.
