Argos miss buzzer-beater to fall 56-55 at MC

Bobos records a career-high 18 rebounds and 16 points in UWF’s first GSC loss

CLINTON, Miss. – The Argonaut women's basketball team missed a buzzer-beating layup to lose its first Gulf South Conference game of the year to Mississippi College 56-55 Thursday afternoon.

MC tied the game 54-54 with 48 seconds remaining and had an opportunity to take the lead with 26 seconds remaining but the Lady Choctaws missed a pair of free throws. A second later, Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala./Sparkman HS) gave UWF a 55-54 lead by making one of two free throws.

The lead was short-lived, however, as MC took its first lead of the half 56-55 after making a layup with nine seconds remaining. UWF inbounded the ball with 2.9 seconds on the clock but missed a layup at the buzzer.

"I think we didn't shoot the ball well again, and that's bound to catch up to you at some point during the season," UWF coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "When you're shooting less than 30 percent from the floor on numerous occasions you're going to run into the team that can score more points than you. We had a lackluster performance coming out of halftime again, and we still haven't figured out how to correct that."

Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind./Lowell HS) ended the first half with a double-double, her second of the season, and finished the game with a career-high 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Brewer notched her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 16 with 12 rebounds.

UWF had its four-game winning streak snapped and will look to rebound when it travels to Cleveland, Miss. to play Delta State in a rematch of the 2013-14 GSC Finals.

"We've got to regroup," Yelton said. "Hopefully, we're looking forward to correcting some problems and getting back on the court tomorrow to practice and prepare for DSU. They're always tough to play at their place."
