PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida men's basketball team will play its remaining games of 2014 this weekend when they travel to Mississippi College Dec. 18 and Delta State Dec. 20.
The Argonauts will first take on Mississippi College Dec. 18 in Clinton, Mississippi at 3 p.m. CT. The Choctaws have a record of 2-4 this season and are 0-4 in the Gulf South Conference. They are coming off of a weekend where they went 0-2 with losses against Union (Tenn.) and Christian Brothers.
UWF will then face Delta State Dec. 20 at 4 p.m. CT in Cleveland, Miss. The Statesmen are 6-4 this season and 3-1 in the GSC and are coming off a weekend where they went 2-0 by defeating CBU and Union (Tenn.).
Around the GSC
Two weeks into GSC play and the No. 20 Alabama Huntsville Chargers are the lone undefeated men's team after topping both West Alabama and West Georgia last week. UAH, along with two 3-1 teams, Christian Brothers and Delta State, make up the Top 3 in the league standings.
UAH held true to its league-leading scoring defense (61.1) topping UWG on Sunday, 79-62. UAH held the Wolves, who hold a GSC-best 89.8 scoring offense, to just 62 points in the victory.
Argos lose tough battle against Lee
The University of West Florida men's basketball team lost its final home game of 2014 to Lee University 68-64 Saturday afternoon. The Argonauts fall to 5-5 (1-3 GSC) with the loss while the Flames improve their record to 7-2 (2-2 GSC).
In the first half, UWF shot 40 percent (13-32) from the field while the Flames shot 52 percent (12-23) but went into halftime with the score tied at 30. The Argos were led by
Tyler Funk (Clarence, N.Y./Hillsborough CC) who scored 10 points in the half on 5-for-6 shooting and added four rebounds.
It would go down to the last minute to decide a victor with both teams trading baskets throughout the second half and with 1:30 left to play UWF and Lee were tied at 62-62. However, some mental mistakes committed by UWF turned the ball over to the Flames and LU left of Pensacola, Florida with the 68-64 victory.
Funk finished the afternoon with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting to tie for the team lead with senior
Terrence Townes (Danville, Va./Gulf Coast State) who had 15 points and added six rebounds.
Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault HS) and
Erin Straughn each had 11 points for the Argos with Straughn leading the team with seven rebounds.
