HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The West Florida women's basketball team held Alabama Huntsville scoreless during the last four minutes of play to defeat the Chargers 61-46 on the road in its Gulf South Conference opener Thursday night.
The Argonauts (4-1, 1-0 GSC) led UAH (3-4, 0-1) 47-45 with 4:33 remaining in regulation but went on a 14-1 run the rest of the game to make the game appear more lopsided than it was.
"Tonight's win was a labored victory," UWF coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "The game was much closer than the final score. I'm proud of this team for battling defensively, especially at the end of the game with big stops and huge rebounds. We were able to make key plays down the stretch to seal the win."
Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind./Lowell HS) and
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala./Sparkman HS) each recorded double-doubles in the win. Bobos scored 12 and added 11 rebounds, and Brewer recorded 10 points and 13 rebounds.
"I can't commend Katie and Toni enough for their effort on the boards," Yelton said. "But I also can't overlook the fact that we had four players with double-digit scoring efforts. With a balanced attack, I think we're a tough team."
Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek HS) led UWF with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals, and
Brianna Williams(Minneapolis, Minn./North Dakota) scored 11 points.
UWF travels to North Alabama for its second GSC contest of the season Dec. 6 at 1 p.m.
