FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of West Florida women's basketball team earned their second Gulf South Conference game of the season Saturday afternoon after the Argonauts defeated the University of North Alabama 70-44. West Florida is now 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the GSC.
"We were extremely proud of the effort we put in on defense today," said head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. "It was definitely the difference in the game.
In the first half, the Argos limited their opponent to just 21 percent (7-34) shooting from the field while UWF shot 48 percent (15-31) and took a 17 point, 36-19 lead into halftime. West Florida was led by freshman Natalie Soper (Onalaska, Wisc./Onalaska HS) led UWF by scoring 11 points off the bench and went 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
West Florida continued to pressure the ball defensively in the second half and only allowed the Lions to 25 points in the half. The Argos held their opponent to just 26 percent (19-72) shooting from the field while UWF shot their highest shooting percentage of the season at 50 percent (30-60).
Three Argos scored in double digits for UWF in the game including freshman
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala./Sparkman HS) who scored a game high 16 points and added nine rebound.
Kelly Preston (Waunakee, Wisc./University of Denver) added 12 points and seven rebounds while Soper finished with 11 points in 14 minutes.
"I'm happy with the way we played but we're not satisfied and are looking forwards to next week's two home games against two tough GSC opponents," continued Lawrence Yelton.
The Argos will return home next weekend when they host Shorter University Dec. 11 and Lee University Dec. 13.
