PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida women's basketball team extended its home winning streak to five and remained unbeaten at home against Gulf South Conference opponents after a 66-55 win over Valdosta State Saturday at the UWF Field House.
The Argonauts (12-3, 9-2 GSC) outrebounded the Blazers (8-9, 4-7) 45-27 and held VSU scoreless (0-for-10) from behind the arc in the win.
"It has been a battle night in and night out in the conference," UWF coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We really had to work hard for scoring opportunities. We had to work extremely hard on defense. We just hit a stretch where we were really clicking there for a stretch in the second half to pull ahead and then keep the lead late in the game."
UWF led 28-24 at the break but VSU tied the game 28-28 two minutes into the second half. The Argos responded by outscoring the Blazers 21-6 during the next 10 minutes to lead 49-34 with 8:28 remaining and hold on the rest of the way.
Four-time GSC Freshman of the Week
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala./Sparkman HS) led UWF with 22 points and 17 rebounds, and
Kelly Preston (Waunakee, Wisc./Denver) scored 19 with seven rebounds and three blocks.
UWF is tied with Union (Tenn.) for first in the GSC standings halfway through the conference schedule. The Argos will host North Alabama Jan. 22 at 5 p.m.
