GAME NOTES: UWF Men's Basketball team returns home to start 2015

Argos will face Union (Tenn.) and Christian Brothers

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida men's basketball team will begin 2015 play this weekend when they host Union (Tenn.) Jan. 3 and Christian Brothers Jan. 5. The Argonauts will first take on Union (Tenn.) Jan. 3 in Pensacola, Florida at 4 p.m. CT. The Bulldogs have a record of 10-2 this season and are leading the Gulf South Conference with a record of 4-2. UWF will then face Christian Brothers Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. CT at the UWF Field House. The Buccaneers are 6-4 this season and 3-3 in the GSC.
 
Around the GSC

No. 20 Alabama Huntsville entered the week as the lone undefeated men's basketball team. The Chargers now stand in a four-way tie for first place at 4-2 with Union, Lee and Delta State, with West Georgia close behind at 3-2.

UU is currently riding a two-game winning streak, while the Bulldogs were also the first men's team to reach double-digit overall wins on the season with wins against both West Alabama and UWG.
 
Argos fall in overtime at Delta State 72-69

The West Florida men's basketball team lost a halftime lead but came back to force overtime before losing to Delta State 72-69 on the road in Cleveland, Miss. Saturday evening.

The Argonauts (5-7, 1-5) led 33-26 at halftime, but the Statesmen (7-5, 4-2) took the lead late in the second half. UWF took a 58-56 lead with 1:36 remaining but DSU scored four unanswered before UWF tied it again, 60-60, with 44 seconds remaining. DSU missed a pair of jumpers in the remaining seconds before the game went into overtime.
 
UWF trailed the entire overtime period, but cut the lead to one, down 70-69 with six seconds remaining, before DSU scored two more unanswered.

Erin Straughn (Pensacola, Fla./East Carolina) recorded the first double-double of his UWF career, leading UWF with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Demetrius Moore (Paxton, Fla./Indiana State) totaled 13 points and seven rebounds, and Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault HS) scored nine with eight rebounds.
