PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team fell to the University of North Alabama 65-79 Thursday night. The Argonauts (6-12, 2-10 GSC) were led by sophomore
Jason Laatsch (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian School) who scored 18 points.
"You got to give them credit, they came out attacking and with a lot of energy" said head coach
Bob Stinnett. "We came out flat early one and fell into a deep hole. We almost dug ourselves out if it in the second half, but ended up short."
The Lions had a hot start shooting the ball and made nine of their first 10 shots and had a 19 point lead with 7:45 remaining in the first half. The Argos would cut down the scoring margin to 13 points at halftime. However, midway through the second half, UWF would go on a 10-1 run and pulled within eight points of the Lions. UWF would eventually get within six points of North Alabama but a 11-3 run by UNA would earn them the 65-79 victory.
Behind Laatsch, the next leading scorer for UWF was senior
Erin Straughn (Pensacola, Fla./East Carolina University) who totaled 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. Senior
Sean Voss (Belton, Texas/Belton HS) tied a career high with seven assists and led the Argos with seven rebounds.
"I was just trying to get my teammates involved as much as possible," said
Sean Voss. "I got to give them credit for knocking down their shots."
West Florida will continue the weekend's action when they host Alabama-Huntsville Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. CT.
