PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida men's basketball team will travel to Cleveland, Tenn. and Rome, Ga. this weekend to face Lee University and Shorter University.
The Argonauts will face the Lee Flames on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. ET. West Florida played the Flames on Dec. 13 where Terrence, Townes (Danville, Va./Gulf Coast State) and
Tyler Funk (Clarence, N.Y./Hillsborough CC) led UWF with 15 points each in a 68-64 loss. Lee comes into the weekend in 10th in the Gulf South Conference standings but are ineligible for the post season during the reclassification process. The Flames currently have a record of 9-9 and are 4-9 in the GSC.
West Florida will then travel to Shorter on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. ET. The Argos lost to the Hawks earlier in the season 81-68, in a game that saw
Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault HS) lead UWF with 20 points. Shorter currently has a record of 14-5 and are in a four-way tie for first place in the GSC.
Around the GSC
An NCAA Division II-leading six teams entered the week tied for first place, but after Delta State fell to West Alabama and Shorter topped Union, only four remain. West Georgia, Alabama Huntsville, SU and UWA are all 9-4 heading into this week.
This week's Thursday matchups will see a battle of two first-place teams when West Georgia travels to Alabama Huntsville and two second-place teams with a Union and Delta State contest. Saturday will feature another first-place matchup for UAH when it travels to take on West Alabama.
There are currently seven NCAA Division II conferences that have at least two men's teams tied atop the standings. The GSC leads all of them with four. UAH, UWA, UWG and SU are all 9-4. The CACC, GLIAC, GLVC, Heartland, NSIC and Peach Belt are the others.
