PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team lost its sixth Gulf South Conference game of the season Saturday night to Union (Tenn.) University 79-82. The Argonauts fall to 5-8 on the season and 1-6 in the GSC while the Bulldogs remain at the top of the conference with at 11-2 (5-2 GSC).
UU entered the night's action on a two game win streak and atop the GSC while the Argos had lost four straight games. The Bulldogs held the lead throughout most of the game but UWF was able to keep themselves in the game but eventually fell 79-82.
"We lost because of some mental mistakes and because of lack of aggression," said head coach
Bob Stinnett. "We rebounded the ball well, but we've got to improve on free throw shooting which has been atrocious all year."
UWF had five different Argos score in double-digits in the loss, including
Terrence Townes (Danville, Va./Gulf Coast State) who scored a team high 18 points and added eight rebounds.
Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault HS) recorded his second double-double of the season after he totaled 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Senior
Erin Straughn (Pensacola, Fla./East Carolina University) added 16 points and eight rebounds while
Jason Laatsch (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian School) and
Tyler Funk (Clarence, N.Y./Hilsborough CC) added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
West Florida will continue conference play on Monday, Jan. 5 when they host Christian Brothers University.
