No. 35 UWF opens season with doubleheader sweep of No. 16 FSC

Argonauts earn a pair of wins at home over nationally-ranked Moccasins

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 35 West Florida baseball team swept its season-opening doubleheader against No. 16 Florida Southern, winning game one 4-3 and game two 3-2.

"I'm very proud of the way our guys fought," UWF coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "We knew that hits were going to be a premium. The hitters are always behind the pitchers early in the year, and Florida Southern has quality pitchers. We had some big two-out hits and two-out rallies."

In the two games, Ledarious Clark (Meridian,Miss./East Mississippi CC) went 3-for-4 with a double  and 2 RBIs, Chase Kiefer (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola Catholic HS) went 4-for-7 with a homer and three runs scored and Jean Figueroa (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Alabama Southern CC) went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs.

"Our pitching was great," Jeffcoat said. "We overcame some defensive miscues but also made some great defensive plays. I'm very proud of the team"

Game One: West Florida 4, Florida Southern 3

UWF took an early lead on a sacrifice fly in the first, but FSC responded with a three-run fourth inning on four hits and an error.

The Argos scored one run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings highlighted by a solo home run by Kiefer in the fifth.

Jarrod Petree (Apopka, Fla./Central Florida) pitched six innings allowing three runs, two earned, with five strikeouts.

Walker O'Connor (Bedford, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) earned the win in relief after pitching two scoreless innings, and freshman Ronnie May (Apopka, Fla./Apopka HS) picked up the first save of his career in the first game of his career.

Game Two: West Florida 3, Florida Southern 2

UWF got on the board in the second inning after Jordan Stark (Flowood, Miss./Jones County CC)  doubled and Jimmy Redovian (Franklin, Tenn./Wake Forest) drove him in on a ground out. Clark extended the lead to 3-0 when he drove in two on a double to right field in the third.

Brandon Nagem (Pensacola, Fla./Northwest Florida State) improved to 1-0 after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing two unearned runs. Josh McLaney (Laurel Hill, Fla./Paxton HS) escaped trouble in 1.1 innings of relief, and May closed his second game in as many chances.
