ROME, Ga. – The West Florida women's basketball team picked up a 69-62 win at Shorter on Saturday thanks to an outstanding overall effort by senior
Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn.). The guard poured in a career-high 23 points with seven rebounds, five assists and five steals to lead the Argonauts to victory. UWF improved to 14-5 overall and 11-4 in GSC play with the win, holding their spot in second place in the league standings. Shorter fell to 9-12, 5-10.
"Brianna played an all-around great game for us today," said UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. "As a team we were able to apply a better defensive and rebounding effort. Offensively our shot selections were much improved.
Courtney Meyer was also key to our win today, as she came in and played some big minutes to relieve pressure in the paint."
Williams' 23 points were two more than her previous career-high, which she also scored against Shorter in a home win in December. UWF also had three other players in double digit scoring,
Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind.) with 12,
Kyla Muhammad (Pensacola, Fla.) with 11 and
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala.) with 10. Meyer (Onalaska, Wisc.) added six points in just 21 minutes.
The Argos won the rebound battle 34-27. Williams led the way with seven, while Brewer had six and Bobos and Meyer each had five. Williams' five assists and five steals led all players.
Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in with three assists, two blocks and one steal.
UWF shot 47.4 percent from the field, and they were also 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the free throw line. The Argos limited Shorter to a 39.3 field goal percentage and caused the Hawks to commit 18 turnovers.
The Argos will face Delta State at home in their next game, a 5 p.m. matchup on Thursday, Feb. 5. The Lady Statesmen (12-7, 10-5 GSC) are one game behind UWF in the GSC standings and will enter the game on a four-game winning streak.
