PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's basketball team defeated Christian Brothers University 64-53 Monday night to extend their winning streak to three games. The Argonauts improve their record to 10-2 (7-1 GSC) to remain atop the Gulf South Conference standings while the Lady Bucs fall to 5-9 (3-5 GSC).
"The first half we didn't come out looking like ourselves," said head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. "But we really responded in the second half by playing well defensively to come out on top tonight."
Christian Brothers had the hot hand in the first half after shooting 41 percent from the field and 43 percent from 3-point range while the Argos shot 32 percent. West Florida would go into the halftime break down 28-30 after a last second three point shot from CBU's Courtney Banks gave them the two point lead. Junior
Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek HS) lead UWF with nine points in the half.
West Florida played strong defensively in the second half and limited their opponent to just 23 points in the half. UWF picked up the pace and outscored the Lady Bucs 36-23 to take the 64-53 win. Senior
Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn./ Hopkins HS) led UWF with 19 points and also grabbed five rebounds and tallied five assists.
Wigfall finished the night with 18 points for UWF while also making five rebounds. Freshman
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala./Sparkman HS) led the Argos on the boards after she grabbed seven rebounds and added 10 points.
West Florida will continue conference play on the road next weekend when they travel to West Alabama January 10 and then West Georgia January 12.
