Tournament Schedule CARROLLTON, Ga. –
The No. 18-ranked University of West Florida volleyball team will compete at the 2015 South Region Crossover on October 16-17 on the campus of the University of West Georgia. The crossover will feature 22 teams from the Gulf South Conference and Sunshine State Conference and will feature a pair of provisional members to the SSC. UWF will face No. 14 Florida Southern on Friday, October 16 at 2:30 p.m. ET before facing No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic at 7 p.m. ET later that day. West Florida will then face Barry on Saturday, October 17 at 12:15 p.m. ET.
CONSECUTIVE WINS RECORD ON THE HORIZONWest Florida has won 13 consecutive matches dating back to September 12. The Argos have only dropped two sets during that streak (39-2) and will have a shot of breaking the program record for consecutive wins in a season this weekend. The UWF volleyball program record for consecutive wins is 13 (2003, 2014). UWF's current winning streak ranks fifth in NCAA DII.
ARGOS RANK NO. 18 IN AVCA DII TOP 25 COACHES POLLUWF team earned the No. 18 ranking in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll after going 3-0 over the past week against Gulf South Conference opponents. West Florida is the only team currently ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA DII Top 25 Coaches Poll from the GSC, and one of four teams representing the South Region in the latest poll. This is the sixth consecutive week that the Argonauts have appeared in the top 25 poll.
CORISHA SMITH NAMED GSC OPOWCorisha Smith was named GSC Offensive Player of the Week after tallying 36 kills with only five attack errors at a .387 clip in three GSC wins this week for UWF. Smith had 18 kills and impressive .459 attack percentage helped UWF hand Valdosta State its first loss of the season in a 3-1 win over the Blazers. The junior again came up clutch again with 11 kills at a .409 clip in a 3-0 sweep over conference rival North Alabama on the road Saturday.
KAT TORRE NAMED GSC DPOWKathryn Torre was named GSC Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 1.50 blocks per set and tallying 15 blocks in three GSC wins for UWF this week. Torre had five blocks to help UWF in the 3-1 win over VSU on Tuesday. The junior had four blocks in the 3-0 win over UAH before tallying an impressive six blocks in a huge road win over North Alabama on Saturday. Torre currently leads the GSC in blocks per set (1.08) and ranks seventh in the conference in attacking percentage (.304).
UWF MOVES INTO FIRST PLACE IN GSCWest Florida currently holds a 1.5-match lead in the GSC volleyball standings after starting the season 10-0 in the GSC. The Argonauts have won its first 10 conference matches in three other years (2011, 2008 and 2007). UWF defeated previously unbeaten Valdosta State 3-1 on October 6 before handing GSC mainstay North Alabama its second conference loss of the season on October 10.
DUYN CLIMBING CAREER KILLS LISTUWF senior
Autumn Duyn currently has 1,227 kills in her career and needs 65 kills to take sole possession of second place on the career kills list at UWF. Chelsea Wilhoite (2007-10) and Lindsay Homme (2009-13) each have 1,291 career kills and are tied for second on the all-time kills list at West Florida. Duyn and Homme were teammates for three seasons from 2011-13. Homme is a two-time GSC Player of the Year (2011, 2013) and Duyn won GSC Player of the Year in 2012. If Duyn tallies 65 kills in the remainder of the 2015 season, she will be the only player in the history of the UWF volleyball program that ranks in the top two in career digs and kills.
