LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team fell to No. 23 West Alabama 1-0 on Sunday in Livingston, Alabama. The Argos fall to 9-4 overall and hold a 5-3 record in the Gulf South Conference with the loss.
The match featured two of the best defenses in the conference in terms of goals allowed, and the teams combined for fewer than 15 total shots and just six shots on goal. West Alabama and UWF each came into the match scoring 2.4 goals per game, which was good for a second-place tie in the GSC. UWF still boasts the best team goals against average in the GSC at 0.77.
UWA struck for the lone goal in the game when Kirsten Reilly put one in the upper 90 from roughly 10 yards out in the 32nd minute. UWF keeper Emily Grammer (Panama City, Fla./Mosley HS) held her own in goal, recording three saves on the afternoon. Grammer's record fell to 3-2 on the year while her GAA goes to an impressive 0.50 for the season.
West Florida defenders stood out again, as Sara Helgadottir (Grindavík, Iceland/Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi), Bri Young (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS), Emily Vogler (Lynn Haven, Fla./Mosley HS) and Elizabeth Vickers (Panama City, Fla./Mosley HS) each went the full 90 minutes for the Argos. Vickers, a freshman, has played every minute for UWF this season.
UWF will host Delta State for the annual Homecoming game and Argonaut Athletic Club Day on Friday, October 23, at 7:30 p.m. before playing host to Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon.
