PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team fell to Lee 1-0 Friday night in a Gulf South Conference match. The Argonauts outshot Lee 19-10 in the match, with seven of the 19 shots going on target.
"I'm really proud of our youngsters for how hard they worked," head coach
Joe Bartlinski said. "Lee defended really well, they're a quality team that will win a lot of games, and if we work this hard for our remaining matches we'll win a lot of games."
West Florida outshot the Flames 7-3 in a scoreless first half, with
Kaley Ward (Saint Cloud, Fla./Tampa) and
Bri Young (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS). The UWF defense did its fair share of work again in the opening 45 minutes, holding a tough Lee offense to just three total shots, and one shot on goal, which was saved by
Ana Chumik (Riga, Latvia Riga Kengarags HS).
The teams would play another scoreless 45, ultimately reaching the end of regulation in a 0-0 tie. After the first 10-minute overtime went scoreless, Lee struck in the 102nd minute with the golden goal, as Kaela Leskovar's lone shot of the night found the upper 90 from 25 yards away.
"For us to come out and take 20 shots, that means we're creating chances, and that's a good sign," Bartlinski said.
Daryl Bell (Sarasota, Fla./Southeast HS) finished the night with seven total shots and tied Lee's Summer Lanter with a game-high three shots on goal. Chumik had another strong showing in goal again for UWF, as the freshman keeper recorded four saves on the five shots Lee put on goal.
UWF will face Shorter in another GSC matchup on Sunday, with the game scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. Live stats and video for the game can be seen at GoArgos.com.
