October 23, 2015

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team dropped a tough decision on Friday night, falling to the Delta State University Statesmen 2-1 in overtime. The Statesmen were able to push the ball offensively to start the first overtime period, and eventually led to a scramble in front of the UWF net giving Delta State forward Ryan Pickup an opportunity to net the game winning goal. West Florida falls to 8-5 on the season and owns a 2-5 Gulf South Conference mark, while Delta State improves to 6-9 on the year with a 3-5 league mark.

DSU opened up the scoring in the 11th minute, as Sebastian Knabke collected a corner and put it away for a 1-0 Statesmen lead. West Florida was able to answer in the 27th minute, as senior defender Soren Yuhaschek (Orlando, Fla./Freedom HS) was able to net his second goal of the season from a Felipe Oliveira (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway HS) corner kick. The assist is Oliveira's team-high fourth of the season.

The Argos and Statesmen would battle to a scoreless second half, although West Florida applied the pressure offensively outshooting Delta State 15-5 in the second half.

UWF outshot DSU 27-11 for the game, while holding a 6-5 advantage in corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Seminole Ridge HS) saved a season-high five shots in the setback. Murray's counterpart Jacob Hauenstein recorded nine saves on the evening.

Senior Jorge Chirinios (Tampa, Fla./Leto HS) led the Argos in shots with a season-high nine scoring opportunities.
