PENSACOLA, Fla. - Felipe Oliveira (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway HS) pulled off the late-game heroics on Sunday afternoon, as the senior was able to net the game-winning tally and break a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon. With the rainy 2-1 victory, West Florida now stands at 9-5 on the year with a 3-5 Gulf South Conference record while Mississippi College falls to 4-10-1 in 2015 with a 2-6-1 league mark. UWF snaps a three-game skid in which each setback was decided in overtime or in the last 10 minutes of regulation.
Â
Oliveira was able to breakaway from all Choctaw defenders, creating a one-on-one situation with Choctaw goalkeeper Humberto Pelaez. Oliveira was able to chip the ball directly over Pelaez, having the ball trickle into the net for the Argos victory. The goal marks as Oliveira's third of the season and the 26th of Oliveira's career, putting him in sole possesion of ninth all-time in UWF men's soccer history.
Â
Although the Argonauts outshot the Choctaws in both regulation and overtime, MC held a 1-0 lead until junior Marteinn Urbancic (Reykjavik, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) was able to convert his fifth goal of the season after collecting a pass from senior Jorge Chirinos (Tampa, Fla./Leto HS) in the 84th minute. The goal for Urbancic now ties him for the team lead, which he shares with freshman Stephen Enderlin (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic High School for Boys).
Â
West Florida defenders only allowed three shots on goal from the Mississippi College attack, with goalkeeper Andre Moreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Colegio de A a Z) stopping two of the three in route to his fifth win of the season. Defenders Michael Starkey (Huddersfield, England/Newsome HS), Zach Reynolds (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS) and Soren Yuhaschek (Orlando, Fla./Freedom HS) played all 106:14 on the backline.
Â
UWF outshot MC 24-8 on the game, while also holding a 8-3 advantage in corners. Urbancic and Chirinos led West Florida with four shots apiece.
Â
Seniors honored in today's pregame ceremony included defenders Andrew Bruce (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips HS), Soren Yuhaschek (Orlando, Fla./Freedom HS) and Andrew Hitt (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside HS), midfielders Zach Reynolds (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS), Miguel Santos (Pensacola, Fla./West Florida HS) and Jorge Chirinos, forwards Christoph Zeller (Pensacola, Fla./Tate HS) and Felipe Oliveria, and goalkeeper Andre Moreira. Over the past four years, this group has attributed to 41 wins, with some of these players being on the 2013 GSC Championship team.
Â
West Florida concludes the 2015 regular season on Friday, when the team travels to Mobile, Alabama to take on Spring Hill in a GSC matchup. Game time for the Argos-Badgers contest is slated for 3:00 p.m.
