PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 21-ranked University of West Florida volleyball team defeated Gulf South Conference opponent Union (Tenn.) 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-9) at home on Saturday. West Florida (14-2, 7-0 GSC) broke the program record for fewest attack errors in a match (3) en route to earning its 10
th straight victory.
"I thought from start to finish this was probably one of the best performances we've had all year," head coach
Melissa Wolter said. "It didn't just start with what we were doing offensively. It started behind the end line. I just feel like when you're in your own gym you ought to be able to serve tough and we certainly did that today."
The Argos tallied a season-high nine service aces in the win and had an impressive seventy six percent side-out percentage.
UWF is now tied first place in the GSC with Valdosta State heading into the Tuesday, October 6 matchup with the Blazers at the UWF Field House. Both teams are undefeated in conference play while VSU boasts an undefeated overall record of 11-0 on the season.
"We've got a couple practices between now and Tuesday," Wolter said. "Obviously Valdosta is a very strong team this year. I think our players are ready to take on the best of the best in the conference and we are just excited to be able to host them on Tuesday and anxious to see who is the best in the conference."
West Florida had 36 kills on 57 attempts with only three attack errors on Saturday and recorded the second best team attacking percentage (.579) in program history.
The offense was once again spread out for UWF as six Argonauts tallied at least five kills in the win. Senior
Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) tallied five kills on six attempts (.833), two solo blocks and a service ace in the win.
Sophomore
Katy Kuhlmeier (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln HS) had six kills on seven attempts (.857) while fellow sophomore setter
Monique StCyr (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown HS) had five kills on six attempts with only one error (.667). StCyr also had 23 assists, a block and a service ace on the day.
Junior
Cora Bidlack (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) added six kills (.462) and three blocks, junior
Corisha Smith (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman HS) had seven kills (.500) and a pair of service aces while junior
Kathryn Torre (Highland, Ill./Highland HS) added five kills (.571) and two blocks in the win.
Junior
Tori Martella (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence HS) had seven digs and a pair of service aces while sophomore
Emily Cosgrove (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain HS) added four blocks and a service ace in the win.
West Florida tallied team attacking percentages over .600 in both the first and third sets, with 14 kills on 20 attempts with only one attack error in the first set (.650) and 11 kills on 17 attempts with no errors in the third (.647).
UWF will next face reigning GSC Tournament Champion Valdosta State at home on Tuesday, October 6 at 7 p.m. CT.
