October 4, 2015 PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 15-ranked University of West Florida men's soccer team topped Shorter University on Sunday, beating the Hawks by a score of 1-0. West Florida continues its strong start to the season and improves to 7-2, while evening its conference mark at 2-2. Shorter now falls to 3-5-1 on the season and stands at 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference.
Senior
Jorge Chirinos (Tampa, Fla./Leto HS) scored the game's lone goal in the 50
th minute after his initial header was saved by Hawks keeper Austen Trevers. However Chirinos remained persistent, collected the rebound, and headed the ball into the back of the net to give the Argos the advantage.
The Argonauts defense was able to record its fourth shutout of the season, allowing only four of the 13 Hawks shots on net. Goalkeeper
Jacob Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Seminole Ridge HS) recorded two saves on the afternoon. Murray improved his season record to 4-0, while improving his goals against average to 0.24 and save percentage to .833. The shutout is Murray's third of the season and West Florida's season average of one goal allowed per game marks as best in the GSC.
Freshman
Stephen Enderlin (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic High School for Boys) led West Florida in shots with five. UWF had a 14-13 advantage in shots, while holding a 5-4 advantage in corners.
West Florida men's soccer remains idle until next Sunday, October 11
th, when the Argos take on Concordia College at the UWF Soccer Complex at 3:00 p.m.
