TAMPA, Fla. – The West Florida women's basketball team suffered a tough shooting night and dropped its season –opener at #20 Tampa, 77-52, at the Martinez Center Friday night.

UWF (0-1) shot just 32 percent and was held scoreless for a combined 7:05 at the end of the second quarter and into the beginning of the third, allowing Tampa to score 14-consecutive points and pull out to a 48-26 lead.

Junior transfer
Alex Coyne led the Argos with 10 points and six assists. She made two of the team's six 3-pointers and had a game-high three steals.
Katie Bobos and
Toni Brewer each had eight, while
Jasmine Wigfall finished with seven on 2-of-13 shooting. Bobos and Brewer pulled down eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

Tampa (1-0) did much of its damage inside, outscoring UWF 38-16 in the paint. Juliana Cavallaro led four starters in double figures as she finished with 21 points and five assists. Cavallaro and Jenny Horvatinovic made four 3-pointers apiece out of the team's 9-for-21 effort.

The Argonauts trimmed the deficit to 14 twice in the second half but were unable get their offense kicked into high gear.

UWF will return to action on Saturday when it faces Rollins in the Spartan Challenge at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
