November 4, 2015 MATCH NOTES (PDF)LIVE STATS/VIDEO PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team will face Lee University in the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Florence, Alabama, on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. The Argonauts advanced to the semifinal round after defeating Christian Brothers 4-1 in Pensacola on Tuesday night.
GSC Historical Stat RankingsWest Florida has the opportunity to rank in the top 10 in GSC history in three statistical categories. The Argonauts defense has held opponents to a 0.61 goals against average, which ties the 2001 squad from Christian Brothers for 11th.
UWF also ranks highly in goals allowed and shots allowed in conference history. The team has allowed just 11 goals and 110 shots to this point, which rank tied for sixth and third in GSC history.
Regional RankingsUWF remained ranked fourth in the latest NCAA South Region ranking, behind No. 8 Barry, No. 24 North Alabama and Tampa. The Argos stand in front of Nova Southeastern, Rollins and Lee in the rankings, and Rollins was knocked out of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament on Tuesday night.
The winners of the GSC and SSC tournaments earn automatic bids into the NCAA Tournament. The remaining four spots in the NCAA Tournament are at-large bids, made up of the four teams in the region with the best rankings.
The first round of the NCAA Tournament follows the same format as the GSC Tournament, as the top two seeds receive bye bids.
Scouting the FlamesLee defeated UWF 1-0 in double overtime on October 2 at the UWF Soccer Complex, with Kaela Leskovar scoring the game-winner for the Flames. UWF played well during the match, outshooting Lee 19-10 and dominating possession for much of the match.
The Flames are led offensively by All-GSC first team performer Summer Lanter, who ranked third in the GSC with nine goals on the season. Like UWF, Lee saw four players make the All-GSC first team: Lanter, midfielder Kinsey Cichowitz, and defenders Laura Thacker and Meagan Newman.
Since the match against Lee, West Florida has gone 8-1 and outscored opponents 26-4. UWF is 2-1 all-time against Lee.
Following LeeIf UWF wins on Friday, it would face either No. 24 North Alabama or West Alabama in the GSC Title match on Sunday. UWF defeated UNA 3-2 on October 11 at home, and fell to West Alabama in a tightly contested battle on October 18 in Livingston, Alabama.
UNA leads the GSC in scoring with 2.8 goals per game, while UWA is in the middle of the pack. The teams are second and third, respectively, in goals against average behind West Florida.
