December 14, 2015 BOX SCORE Rome, Ga. – The University of West Florida women's basketball team picked up a 59-56 Gulf South Conference win at Shorter on Monday evening. UWF was led offensively by
Belle Bistrow (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence HS) with 15 points, while
Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind./Lowell HS) scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the victory, her third double-double of the year.
Bistrow tied her career high with 15 points on 6-8 shooting, including three makes in four tries from beyond the arc. Bistrow scored 10 of those points and grabbed three rebounds in the second half, when she went 4-4 from the field.
As a team, UWF shot 58 percent from the field in the second half, and held an edge in the paint by outscoring the Hawks 26-12 down low. The West Florida defense held Shorter to just six made field goals in the first half and kept the Hawks at 29 percent shooting for the whole game. UWF also won the rebounding battle, grabbing 39 boards compared to Shorter's 30.
After an up-and-down first half that left the Argos down two points, UWF closed out the third quarter on a 13-1 run and took a seven-point lead into the final 10 minutes. The Argonauts extended that lead to 15 with a 6-0 run to start the fourth.
Bobos and
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala./Sparkman HS) tallied double-digit rebounds in the win, while
Kelly Preston (Waunakee, Wisc./Denver) scored 12 points, her season best.
UWF will face Mississippi College in the UWF Field House on Thursday, December 17, at 5:30 p.m. UWF SGA will host the first Whataburger Food Drive on Thursday, in partnership with Whataburger. Free Whataburger coupons will be given to every fan that brings a canned good or toiletry item to Thursday's game, and all donations will benefit UWF students by going to the Argo Pantry.
