PENSACOLA, Fla. – Austin Somerfield and
Mario Stramaglia each scored in double figures but the West Florida men's basketball team suffered a tough 74-65 loss to No. 19 Alabama Huntsville in the Gulf South Conference opener at the UWF Field House Wednesday.
UWF (1-3, 0-1 GSC) shot 38 percent from the floor and was just 14-for-25 from the foul line. Somerfield had 19 points and 17 boards for his second double-double in the last three games. Stramaglia finished with 17 points and connected on a career-high five 3-pointers.
UAH (4-2, 1-0) made 42 percent from the floor and got 25 points from Sean Webster.
The Charges led 41-33 at the half. UWF climbed to within three on a number of occasions early in the second, with the last coming on a Somerfield free throw that made it 46-43 with 16:38 left. UAH then stretched its lead to a game-high 13 with a 15-5 run.
UWF will return to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts North Alabama in a women's men's doubleheader. Tip-off for the women's game is set for 2 p.m. with the men's game at approximately 4 p.m.
