PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's basketball team fell at the hands of Alabama Huntsville on Wednesday afternoon, as the Chargers were able to record a 65-58 win at the Field House. The contest marked as the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams, as West Florida now stands at 2-3 overall on the season, while Alabama Huntsville continues its successful start to the season and moves to 4-1 on the year.
Jasmine Wigfall posted an impressive performance in the team's GSC opener, as the senior was able to tally 18 points while recording a game-high two blocks. Wigfall converted six of her 11 shot attempts, including her one and only attempt from three-point land. Toni Brewer added 16 points, in addition to grabbing seven rebounds in the effort. Kelly Preston led the Argos efforts on the glass, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Alex Coyne posted eight points and a team-high seven assists.
Despite trailing by 12 at the halftime break, West Florida was able to tie the game at 56-56 with 3:09 remaining in regulation after a successful jumper by Wigfall. The teams would go scoreless in each of its next couple possessions, which included two big defensive stops from blocks by Preston and Wigfall. The Argos were able to gain a 58-56 lead after a pair of successful free throws by Coyne with 1:35 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Chargers were led by Halle Jarnagin, who recorded 11 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists in the win. The Chargers used a strong first half shooting performance to jump ahead 41-29 at the halftime break. UAH shot 60% in the first half, converting 15 of 25 field goal attempts. Alabama Huntsville was able to use strong outside shooting all game long, going 11-21 (52.4%) from beyond the arc. Four Charger players converted multiple three point shots.
West Florida converted on 92% of its free throw attempts, highlighted by Wigfall converting on all five of her shots from the charity stripe. Both teams recorded 22 points in the paint, while UAH obtained a narrow advantage in points off turnovers having 19 in comparison to UWF's 18. The Argos were able to tally six fast break points, while holding not allowing the Chargers to take advantage of any fast break opportunities.
UWF now looks towards its Saturday match up against a 1-6 North Alabama squad, which is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start at the Field House. The UWF men's basketball team will follow, as its contest against North Alabama is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. tip off.
