PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 35 West Florida baseball team won the rubber game of its first Gulf South Conference series of the season against North Alabama 9-3 Sunday at Jim Spooner Field.
Every Argonaut (7-2, 2-1) batter in the starting lineup recorded a hit and six Argos recorded multi-hit games in the win over the Lions (7-3, 1-2).
"We swung the bats great today," UWF coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "We did a lot of situational hitting and put the ball in play to make some things happen.
"
Alex Stevens gave us a solid start through five innings, and what can you say about
Josh McLaney. When they drew it to within 6-3, we really needed to shut them down, and he did that for three solid innings. It was great to get the series victory today and move on."
UWF got on the board in the first on an RBI single from
Sean Plunkett (Ocala, Fla./College of Central Florida). The Argos scored two more in the second on a
Jimmy Redovian (Franklin, Tenn./Wake Forest) RBI double and a
Ledarious Clark (Meridian, Miss./East Mississippi CC) sacrifice bunt.
UWF added three runs on three hits in the fourth before UNA cut the lead to 6-3 with three runs in the fifth.
Alex Stevens (Pensacola, Fla./Lurleen B. Wallace CC) improved to 2-0 after pitching five innings, allowing three runs, two earned with four strikeouts.
Nick Kerkmann (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) drove in two with a bases-loaded single up the middle and
Alex Greene (Orlando, Fla./Hagerty HS) drove in one with a single to right in the eighth to give UWF a 9-3 lead.
Josh McLaney (Laurel Hill, Fla./Paxton HS) pitched three innings of hitless relief, facing the minimum number of batters and striking out six before
Ronnie May (Apopka, Fla./Apopka HS) closed the game with a hitless ninth.
UWF travels to Valdosta, Ga. to play Valdosta State in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. ET.
