PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida softball team will compete in their first road games of the season this weekend when they travel to face No. 2 Valdosta State University Feb. 21-22.
The Argonauts (1-9, 0-3 GSC) will begin the series with a doubleheader against the Blazers on Saturday with first pitch slated to start at 2 p.m. ET in Valdosta, Georgia. UWF will then conclude the series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
UWF will also travel for a mid-week match-up against the University of Montevallo on Wednesday, Feb. 25. First pitch of the doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. CT.
Previewing No. 2 Valdosta State
The Argos will face a tough opponent this weekend when they take on second ranked Valdosta State in Valdosta, Georgia.
The Blazers (11-2, 2-1 GSC) opened Gulf South Conference play last weekend against Shorter University where they defeated the Hawks in two games for the 2-1 series victory.
Reigning three-time GSC Player of the Year, Courtney Albritton, leads the Blazers offensively so far this season after starting hot with a .548 batting average with seven homeruns, 15 RBI, and has scored 21 runs.
Leading the Blazers in the circle is junior Caitlyn Calhoun who has a 6-1 record so far this season with an ERA of 0.89 in 47.0 innings. Calhoun was awarded the NFCA Division II Softball National Pitcher of the Week last weekend after she went 3-0 over 20 innings, struck out 29 batters and help opposing teams to a .181 batting average.
Previewing Montevallo
West Florida will travel to Montevallo, Alabama for a non-conference match-up against Montevallo on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The Falcons will face Florida Southern and Eckerd on Feb. 21 and 22 before facing the Argos.
Montevallo (8-6, 0-0 PBC) is in their inaugural softball season at the University and will compete in the Peach Belt Conference. The Falcons last games were Feb. 14-15 when they competed in the Cougar Classic in Columbus, Georgia, and went 1-4 during the tournament. UM previously defeated GSC opponent West Alabama on January 31 in both games of a doubleheader and had their doubleheader against Delta State postponed.
Around The GSC
After the dust settled from the first weekend of Gulf South Conference play, both North Alabama and No. 9 Alabama Huntsville emerged as the current league leaders, both at 3-0. The Lions swept West Florida and West Georgia dropped three to the Chargers. Four teams took their respective series to close the weekend at 2-1; Valdosta State, Delta State, Union and Mississippi College.
In a possible preview of two GSC Tournament teams, the 2014 GSC Tournament Champions, Valdosta State, took two of the three games against Shorter, the 2014 NCCAA National Champions, last weekend.
UAH jumped up three spots in the latest NFCA National Top 25 Poll. The Chargers split their two-game series against Nova Southeastern last week and closed it with a series sweep over UWG to improve to 8-3 (3-0 GSC).
This weekend will feature a big 1-2 matchup between UNA and DSU, while the other first-place team, UAH, will see LU on the road.
