PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida softball team split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Christian Brothers at the UWF Softball Complex on Friday. The Argonauts fell to the Lady Buccaneers 10-4 in the first game but came back with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.
Game 1: Christian Brothers 10, West Florida 4: Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fla.) and
Emily Pettigrew (Navarre, Fla.) were bright spots for UWF (2-13, 1-7 GSC) in game one, as both hit 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Belser's two hits were both RBI doubles, and Pettigrew drove in two with a hit in the sixth.
Meghan Toney (Huntsville, Ala.) also had a good game at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 with three singles.
CBU (4-12, 2-6 GSC) got all the offense they needed for the win with a seven-run first inning. UWF's starting pitcher
Sarah Maloney (Tamarac, Fla.) gave up six runs on one hit and three walks in the first, and she was credited with the loss to fall to 1-4 on the season.
Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla.) relieved Maloney and was effective in seven innings, allowing four runs, two earned, while striking out six.
Kylie Steagall (2-4) pitched a complete game for CBU, allowing two earned runs in seven innings in the win.
Game 2: West Florida 2, Christian Brothers 1: Kalyn Chapman (Boonville, Ind.) pitched a complete game for UWF in the team's first GSC win of the year in the nightcap. The junior right-hander scattered seven hits and two walks while striking out six over seven innings, and she improved to 1-5 on the season.
CBU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Alexis Seward, but the momentum shifted in the bottom of the fifth. UWF's
Chelsy Krantz tripled to the right field gap with one out in the inning, and Belser came up next and connected with a two-run home run to put UWF on top. CBU had batters reach base in the sixth and seventh innings, but Chapman survived the rallies and clinched the win for the Argos.
Belser finished the game 2-for-2, and Toney also had her second multi-hit game of the day with a 2-for-3 performance in game two.
Kasey Beekman (2-7) pitched a complete game for the Lady Bucs, giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks while being credited with the loss.
"Kayla Chapman did a great job in game two, and it was nice to see her go the distance," said UWF head coach
Melissa Paul. "A few of our hitters are starting to get hot.
Meghan Toney and
Jenna Belser had great days at the plate, and
Chelsy Krantz got things started for us with a big triple in game two. Hopefully our hitting will be contagious. We're headed in the right direction."
The Argos will face CBU in the series finale at the UWF Softball Complex on Saturday, Feb. 28, and first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. For information on all UWF athletics, visit
