Wigfall, Williams lead UWF to 21-point victory over Mississippi College

Duo combines to score 38 points in UWF’s 74-53 victory

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida women's basketball team picked up another key Gulf South Conference victory at the UWF Field House on Saturday, as the Argonauts defeated Mississippi College 74-53. UWF was led by junior Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla.) and senior Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn.), as both players scored 19 points in the victory.

The Argos improved to 16-5 overall and 13-4 in GSC play with Saturday's win to hold on to their spot in second place in the conference standings. The win also marked the team's 10th win in 12 games at home. Mississippi College fell to 8-13 overall and 4-13 in conference play with the loss.

With 19 points each, Wigfall and Williams combined to score more than half of UWF's points in the victory. Williams totaled seven rebounds, five assists and five steals, while Wigfall had six rebounds, three assists and steals.

"It's not just their offense, but it's their defense," explained UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. "We had tenacious defense late in the game, and that's what was impressive about how they played today."

Williams was 9-for-11 at the free throw line, and Wigfall was 9-for-12. The Argos made a season-high 30 free throws and were successful 78.9 percent of the time (30-for-38).

"We knew we were capable of shooting like this at the free throw line," said Yelton. "It's great to see our kids be aggressive, attacking the basket, and getting the ball inside so that we can get to the line. It's a huge part of our game, and we have to do that to be successful."

Junior Kyla Muhammad (Pensacola, Fla.) added 12 points, her fourth game in the last six with 10 or more points. Freshman Courtney Meyer (Onalaska, Wisc.) also continued her strong play of late, scoring 10 points to mark her second straight double digit scoring output. Meyer added five rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Argos dominated the boards and totaled 40 rebounds to the Choctaws' 23. Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala.) led UWF with eight rebounds.

Next up for UWF will be a trip to Tennessee, as the Argos will face Christian Brothers on Feb. 12 and first place Union on Feb. 14. The Argos have five games left in the regular season before the GSC Tournament, which will start on March 3 at campus sites.

"Each game is important, and none is more important than the other," said Yelton. "The game we play next is the most important one on our mind. We're trying to keep that mentality and that focus, and hopefully we'll clinch a good seed going into the tournament."
