West Florida splits doubleheader with Mercyhurst

Taylor throws one hitter in second game

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The University of West Florida softball team split a doubleheader with non-conference opponent Mercyhurst University Tuesday afternoon. The Argonauts (6-17, 3-9 GSC) were led by freshman Kaylen Rowell (Pensacola, Fla./Tate HS) who went 2-for-5 at the plate and drove in four runs for the Argos.

Game 1: West Florida 3, Mercyhurst 7

On a perfect day for softball, West Florida started game one of the double looking to get ahead early and ended up scoring one run in the first inning from an RBI single by Rowell. The Argos would hold the Lakers scoreless for two innings, but a three run third inning for MU would give them the lead. The Lakers would never lose the lead after then, and UWF would fall 7-3 after scoring two runs in the seventh.

Junior Lauren Register (Vernon, Fla./Vernon HS) was credited with the loss after pitching three innings in relief and gave up four runs, zero earned, off of five hits.

Seven different Argos registered a hit in the game, including Rowell who led UWF after she went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Game 2: West Florida 3, Mercyhurst 0

West Florida jumped to an early 2-0 lead over the Lakers in the first inning after Rowell hit a single that drove in both runs for the Argos. UWF added one more run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.

That's all the run support sophomore pitcher Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) would need after she held the Lakers to just one hit and completed the shut out for the Argos. Taylor complimented her dominate performance in the circle and stuck out three batters and walked only four.

"Becca did a great job for us today," said head coach Melissa Paul. "She's hitting her spots and keeping the ball down, and we can't ask anything more from her. She's giving us a lot of confidence heading into the weekend."

West Florida will resume Gulf South Conference play this weekend when they host No. 9 Alabama Huntsville for a three game series March 14 and 15.
