Argos win two extra-inning games on walk offs

UWF defeats Lee 2-1 in 12 innings of game one and 5-4 in eight innings of game two

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Kyle Hamner drew a walk-off, bases-loaded walk to win game one 2-1 in 12 innings, and Ledarious Clark blasted a two-run, walk-off homer to win game two 5-4 as the West Florida baseball team swept a doubleheader against Lee Saturday at Jim Spooner Field.

The Argonauts (18-11, 12-8) came back in dramatic fashion in both games to defeat the Flames (17-12-1, 8-10-1).

"These were some great home victories today in conference play," UWF coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "Our team has been struggling, so it was a great sweep today.

"I can't say enough about the way Nagem and our relievers pitched in game one and the way Stevens threw in game two. Then of course Clark with the big homer. I'm really proud of these guys, and hopefully we can keep the momentum going."

Game One: West Florida 2, Lee 1 (12 innings)

After forcing extra innings by tying the game 1-1 in the ninth, UWF loaded the bases in the 12th. Hamner (Maitland, Fla./Edgewater HS) won the game when he drew a walk to bring in the game-winning run.

Brandon Nagem (Pensacola, Fla./Northwest Florida State) pitched seven innings, allowing just one run with five strikeouts, but received no decision.

Down 1-0 with two out in the bottom of the ninth, Jimmy Redovian (Franklin, Tenn./Wake Forest) tied the game with an RBI double.

Three Argo pitchers combined to pitch five innings of scoreless relief. Josh McLaney (Paxton, Fla./Laurel Hill HS) was credited with the win after striking out two in the 12th inning.

Game Two: West Florida 5, Lee 4 (8 innings)

Lee led 3-0 after scoring two runs in the first and one in the second. UWF responded with runs off RBI singles from Nick Kerkmann (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) and Redovian in the second and third innings, and the Argos tied the game in the fifth when Michael Tomlinson (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS) drove in a run on a ground-rule double.

Alex Stevens (Pensacola, Fla./Lurleen B. Wallace CC) pitched six scoreless innings of relief before allowing a run in extra innings. He finished the day with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched. Reed Bright (Pelham, Ala./Snead State CC) finished the seventh inning, earning the win after throwing 0.1 innings.

Down 4-3, Redovian led off the eighth inning with a single before Clark hit a game-winning homer.

UWF wraps up the series against Lee Sunday, March 29, at 1 p.m.
