PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida baseball team failed to sweep Lee, losing the third game of its Gulf South Conference series 7-4 Sunday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field.
The Argonauts (18-12, 12-9) came back from an early deficit to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Flames (18-12-1, 8-11-1) added more four runs and UWF was unable to come back a second time.
"Today, we didn't come out with the same energy as yesterday," UWF coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "We had a lot of scoring opportunities. Just putting balls in play would've kept the game close. We let them keep getting runs. They just kept tacking them on, and we couldn't answer."
UWF took an early lead when
Nick Kerkmann (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) walked to lead off the second and came around to score after a sacrifice bunt and a Lee error.
The Flames responded with a three-run third, but the Argos tied the game 3-3 after scoring two runs on two hits, a walk and an error in the fourth.
Matt Rodriguez (Ocala, Fla./College of Central Florida) took the loss after pitching three innings and allowing two runs while striking out five in relief.
Lee added runs in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings. The Argos were able to score one more in the ninth when
Nic Strasser (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips HS) drove in
Jimmy Redovian (Franklin, Tenn./Wake Forest) on a ground out.
UWF hosts Mobile Tuesday, March 31, at 6 p.m. at Jim Spooner Field.
