PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader with Lee University Saturday afternoon. The Argonauts (10-22, 5-14 GSC) will finish the three game series with Lee tomorrow at noon CT at the UWF Softball Complex.
Game 1: Lee 7, West Florida 6 West Florida led throughout most of the first game, but a late comeback by the Lady Flames stopped the Argos from earning their sixth GSC win of the season. UWF led 3-1 after the third inning and extended their lead to 5-2 after the fourth when
Chelsy Krantz (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Iowa Central CC) and
Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fla./Holmes County HS) each hit RBI singles in the inning.
But Lee responded in the fifth and sixth innings with two and three runs respectively, to complete the comeback and take a 7-5 lead over UWF. West Florida made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh when reigning GSC Freshman of the Week
Kaylen Rowell (Pensacola, Fla./Tate HS) hit a solo homerun to make it 7-6. However, Lee would get the final outs they needed and took game one 7-6.
Rowell led things offensively for the Argos by going 1-for-2 at the plate with a solo homerun and tallied two RBI. In total, five different Argos tallied an RBI in the game.
Game 2: Lee 6, West Florida 0 West Florida seemed to have lost its momentum they had gained in game one and had no answer for Lee's Angie Hughes who held the Argos to seven scoreless innings and only one hit. The Argos drew seven walks in the game and loaded the bases twice but failed to produce a hit when they needed it most and left a total of 10 runners on base throughout the game.
Junior
Emily Pettigrew (Navarre, Fla./Pensacola State College) registered the only hit for UWF in the game and
Rebecca Hein (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) was credited with the loss.
The Argos will wrap-up the three game series against Lee tomorrow when they play a single game starting at noon CT.
