PENSACOLA Fla. – The West Florida baseball team defeated NAIA No. 22 Mobile 8-3 Tuesday night at Jim Spooner Field.
The Argonauts (25-11) used a seven-run fifth inning to pull away from the Rams (19-12) who didn't score until the eighth.
"I thought we swung the bats a lot better," UWF coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "We hit some balls hard that didn't end up being hits. They gave us a few extra opportunities with some walks, but we capitalized with a big seven-run inning.
"I thought the pitching did good. We got a lot of guys in there tonight. O'Connor bounced back after a short outing last weekend. We got him back on track, and hopefully we can carry that momentum into conference play this weekend."
UWF took the lead after three consecutive two-out hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Ben Emery (Dunedin, Fla./Pensacola State) drove in the run for the first hit of his UWF career in the second at bat of his UWF career.
The Argonauts batted around in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs on five hits with three walks.
Walker O'Connor (Bedford, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) improved to 5-3 after pitching five scoreless innings and striking out four.
Emery finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a walk, and
Jordan Stark (Flowood, Miss./Jones County CC) went 3-for-4 with a run.
UWF will host Mississippi College Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4, during Military Appreciation Day sponsored by Whataburger and UWF Army ROTC.
