West Florida splits doubleheader at West Alabama

Argos comeback in game one to win 5-3 in eight innings, fall 4-0 in game two

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Florida softball team split its doubleheader at the University of West Alabama Sunday afternoon. The Argonauts (16-29, 8-20 GSC) came back to defeat the Tigers 5-3 in eight innings in game one, but fell 4-0 in game two.

"We had a slow start in game one," said head coach Melissa Paul. "But we made some adjustments, got the bats rolling, and were able to come away with at least one win today."

Game 1: West Florida 5, West Alabama 3 (8 innings)

West Alabama got on the scoreboard first after they scored two runs in the first inning. The Tigers would add another run in the fourth inning and led West Florida 3-0 with three innings left to play. UWF's bats came alive in the sixth inning when the Argos totaled four hits in the inning and scored three runs to tie the game.

It would need extra innings to find a winner between the two Gulf South Conference schools. West Florida took their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning by scoring two runs to go up 5-3. Sophomore pitcher Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) shut out the bottom half of the inning to seal the win for UWF.

Taylor went all eight innings for UWF to earn the complete game and allowed only two earned runs while striking out five batters. Senior Bianca Lopez (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American HS) led UWF at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and one run scored.

Game 2: West Florida 0, West Alabama 4

West Alabama scored first in the second game with one run in the first inning and the Tigers added two more runs in the fourth to lead UWF 3-0. UWA would go on to add another run in the fifth inning and eventually defeated UWF 4-0 in game two.

West Florida totaled three hits in the game with two coming from pitcher Kalyn Chapman (Boonville, Ind./Wabash Valley JC) who went 2-for-3. In the circle, Chapman went five innings and gave up four earned runs while striking out four batters.

UWF will wrap-up the three game series tomorrow with one game starting at 1 p.m. CT.
