PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team defeated Delta State University 3-1 in the final game of the 2015 season. The Argonauts (19-30, 11-21 GSC) finished Sunday's game that was suspended before the 3-1 victory. UWF fell to the Lady Statesmen in the suspended game 1-0.
"It's not very often that a team can end their season on a win," said head coach
Melissa Paul. "I was proud of our girls able to come out and fight to end this season on a high note."
Game 2 (continued from 4/25): Delta State 1, West Florida 0 In a game that suspended due to inclement weather, the Lady Statesmen managed to outlast the Argos in a 1-0 pitchers duel. Both teams completed three innings on April 25 before being rained out. Delta State scored the only run of the game in the first inning on Saturday.
UWF was unable to produce a run after outhitting their opponent 4-2 in the game and left four runners in scoring position throughout the game.
Junior Kayln Chapman (Boonville, Ind./Wabash Valley JC) keep the Argos close after going all seven innings, only giving up two hits and one run and struck out nine batters. But West Florida couldn't produce timely hitting and UWF fell to Delta State 1-0.
At the plate, UWF was led by senior
Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fla./Holmes County HS) who went 1-for-3 with a triple and fellow senior
Lou Barnard (Apopka, Fla./Lake Sumter State College) also went 1-for-3 but had a double.
Game 3: Delta State 1, West Florida 3 The Lady Statesmen scored first in the final game of the series with a run in the second inning. West Florida responded with two runs in the third inning and took a 2-1 lead. Belser and
Meghan Toney (Huntsville, Ala./Madison County HS) each recorded RBI in the inning for the Argos.
Belser tallied another RBI in the game after she drove in
Bianca Lopez (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American HS) from third to take a 3-1 lead after six.
Becca Taylor went all seven innings and shutout the seventh inning for the Argos and earned the complete game win. She finishes the season with an 11-8 record after only allowing one run in the final game.
West Florida wraps-up the 2015 season with a 19-30 record and 11-21 record in the Gulf South Conference.
