Argos defeat Mississippi College on walk-off

Barnard hits walk-off single to defeat MC 1-0

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The University of West Florida softball team defeated Mississippi College 1-0 Friday afternoon after Lou Barnard (Apopka, Fla./Apopka HS) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. The Argonauts (12-24, 6-15) saw a dominate performance by Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) in the circle who earned the complete game shutout.

Both pitchers for each team started the game strong, and held the opposing team scoreless through two innings with each team only able to reach base once. Neither team could connect hits throughout the rest of the game and through six innings, both pitchers threw shutout softball and only allowed three hits.

Mississippi College threatened in the top of the seventh inning and had a runner on third with two one out, but Taylor got out of the jam with a strikeout and groundball to end the inning. The Argos had the leadoff batter, Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fla./Holmes County HS), reach base after a leadoff double in the bottom half of the inning. And with one out, sophomore Jessica Wilkinson (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) doubled but pinch runner Sarah Adams (Hazel Green, Ala./Hazel Green HS) was called out at home.

A few key substitutions by Paul put Jordan Camp (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley HS) on second and Barnard up to bat. Barnard delivered at the plate and hit a single up the middle and Camp caught the defense not paying attention and broke for home to score the game winning run.

Taylor earned the complete game shutout, her second of the season, after only allowing three hits and struck out a career high 11 batters. Five Argos recorded hits in the game including three who hit doubles. Chelsy Krantz (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Iowa Central CC), Belser, and Wilkinson each tallied a double, while Belser led UWF after being the only Argo to register multiple hits in the game (2-for-3).

West Florida will conclude the three game series tomorrow when they play a doubleheader against the Lady Choctaws slated to start at 1 p.m. CT.
