West Florida falls 7-4 in GSC Baseball Tournament opener

Argonauts will face elimination against tournament host West Alabama on Sunday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Florida baseball team fell behind in the middle innings and couldn't come back against West Georgia in a 7-4 loss on the first day of the Gulf South Conference Tournament hosted by West Alabama on Saturday. The Argonauts will face elimination on Sunday against UWA, and first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The game was a pitchers' duel early, as both teams were held scoreless through three innings. Brandon Nagem (Pensacola, Fla.) got the start on the mound for UWF, but West Georgia rallied for four total runs in the fourth and fifth innings, knocking him out of the game. The left-hander lasted 4.2 innings with four runs allowed, two earned, on eight hits in the loss (7-3).

The Argos took the first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning, as Kyle Hamner (Maitland, Fla.) singled home Alex Greene (Orlando, Fla.) from second base. The Wolves responded in the bottom of the inning with their first two runs, but the Argos tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth on a throwing error by the UWG catcher on a steal attempt by Ledarious Clark (Meridian, Miss.). The Wolves regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth and held it the rest of the way.

Jamie Sexton lasted six-plus innings for the Wolves, allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out five. The right-hander improved to 9-3 with the win. Tyler Gunnin recorded his 11th save of the year after inducing a game-ending popup.

Chase Kiefer (Pensacola, Fla.) was a bright spot for UWF offensively, as he finished 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base. Jordan Starck (Flowood, Miss.) also posted a multi-hit game for the Argos at 2-for-4.

"We have to give West Georgia credit today," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "They played very well. They swung the bats well. We made some errors that let them keep scoring runs. We fought back and scored a couple to make it 7-4, but it wasn't our night. We've got to regroup, come back and try to show some pride out here tomorrow."

The double elimination tournament will continue on Sunday, and UWF will face elimination against No. 1 seed West Alabama at 3:30 p.m. The Tigers defeated Delta State 10-4 on Saturday.
