WINTER PARK, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team defeated No. 1 Rollins College 5-1 on Friday afternoon. Junior Kaley Ward (Saint Cloud, Fla./Tampa) led UWF offensively with three goals on four shots.
Ward kick started the West Florida offense with a goal in the 11th minute. Emily Vogler (Lynn Haven, Fla./Mosley HS) was credited with her first assist of the season, as she dished the ball to Ward after a Sara Helgadottir (Grindav'k, Iceland/Menntask'linn ' K'pavogi) free kick. Rollins struck back with a goal less than a minute later on a free kick to even the score 1-1.
UWF took the lead back at the 30-minute mark when Ward charged in on a deflected shot from Daryl Bell (Sarasota, Fla./Southeast HS), who was credited with her second assist of the year. West Florida would take a 2-1 lead into the half, outshooting Rollins 11-3 and putting up six shots on goal against the Tars' two.
Amber Pennybaker (Indianapolis, Ind./Tampa) added her second goal of the season in the 79th minute to stretch the lead to 3-1, and Ward added her third and final goal with a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Audrey Johnson (Fleming Island, Fla./Fleming Island HS) scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 85th minute, putting a shot by the keeper after it was deflected.
West Florida's win was its first over a ranked opponent since the Argos beat No. 9 Western Washington in the 2013 NCAA National Semifinal, and its first win over a top-ranked team in the country since defeating Armstrong in the 2012 NCAA Quarterfinals. Ward's hat trick was the first for a UWF player since Sara Helgadottir scored three goals against West Alabama in November 2013.
UWF finished the match outshooting Rollins 20-4, with 14 shots on goal compared to three from Rollins.
