Urbancic's late-game heroics push UWF past Spring Hill

After 100 scoreless minutes, Marteinn Urbancic buried the game-winning goal to help No. 25 UWF stay undefeated

September 17, 2015

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team was victorious on Thursday night, defeating Spring Hill in a double overtime thriller by a score of 1-0. West Florida remains undefeated on the season and moves to 4-0, while the loss for Spring Hill brings its record down to 1-3.

Just 26 seconds after the start of the second overtime period, junior Marteinn Urbancic (Reykjavik, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) received a Felipe Oliveira (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway HS) pass in front of the Badgers' net, and Urbancic cashed in on the opportunity by shooting the ball past the keeper in the bottom right corner of the net.

The Argos controlled the pace of the game despite battling to a 0-0 up until the end of the first overtime period. UWF held the edge in shots, having 22 to Spring Hill's five, while also owning an advantage in corner kicks, with the Argos taking five in comparison to the Badgers' three.

Sophomore Jacob Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Seminole Ridge HS) posted his second shutout of the season, as attacks from the Badgers' offense were usually halted early by the Argonauts defenders. Murray stopped the lone Spring Hill shot on goal to post one save on the evening. Freshman Michael Starkey (Huddersfield, England/Newsome HS) and senior Soren Yuhaschek (Orlando, Fla./Freedom HS) both played all 100 minutes of the game on the backline to preserve an Argonauts shutout and victory.

West Florida will head to Mobile, Alabama, to play the University of Mobile on Monday, September 21st, for a 7:30 p.m. matchup. Following the game against Mobile, UWF beings Gulf South Conference competition on the road against Union in Jackson, Tennessee, on Friday, September 25th, at 7:15 p.m.
