September 19, 2015BOX SCOREMOBILE, Ala. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team defeated Spring Hill 5-0 on Saturday afternoon, giving the Argos a win in their first Gulf South Conference game of the season. The West Florida defense held the Badgers to just one shot on the afternoon, topping Spring Hill 27-1 in that category and putting 13 of those shots on goal.
West Florida came out with a strong attack and a tough defense to match, as the team did not allow Spring Hill to take a shot in the first half, ultimately outshooting the Badgers 11-0. As the half came to a close, UWF took the lead when
Daryl Bell (Sarasota, Fla./Southeast HS) netted her third goal of the year with nine seconds remaining.
Bri Young (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) picked up her first assist of the year on the play.
The Argos extended the lead early in the second half with
Kaley Ward's (Saint Cloud, Fla./Tampa) team-best sixth goal of the season, and
Svenja Burkhardt (Bad Salzuflen, Germany/Gymnasium Heepen) notched her second assist of the season.
Emily Grammer (Panama City, Fla./Mosley HS) stretched the lead again in the 70th minute with the first goal of her career.
Amber Pennybaker (Indianapolis, Ind./Tampa) put in her third goal of the season to make the UWF lead 4-0 in the 78th minute, and
Sofie Broch-Lips (Aarhus, Denmark/Marselisborg Gymnasium) increased the Argo lead to 5-0 just four minutes later with the first goal of her collegiate career. Bell picked up her third assist of the season on Pennybaker's goal.
The West Florida defense held the Badgers to just one shot on the afternoon, topping Spring Hill 27-1 in that category and putting 13 of those shots on goal.
UWF will play its home opener against Montevallo on Tuesday, September 22, at 5 p.m.
