September 24, 2015 PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 17 University of West Florida men's soccer team begins Gulf South Conference play this weekend against Union (Tenn.) and No. 10 Christian Brothers. The contest against Union will be on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex in Jackson, Tennessee, with UWF battling Christian Brothers on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Signaigo Field.
Goal-scorer by committee
UWF has totaled 11 goals on the season which have come via eight different goal scorers thus far with all five game winning goals this season being scored by different Argonauts players. Freshman
Stephen Enderlin and junior
Marteinn Urbancic lead the team in goals so far, with Enderlin netting three and Urbancic cashing in a pair. Senior
Felipe Oliveira leads the team in assists with three.
West Florida has outscored its opponents 11-4, while outshooting its opponents 85-46.
Argonauts rank No. 17 nationally
After breaking into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America at No. 25 last week, West Florida men's soccer team jumped up eight spots to No. 17 on Tuesday.
West Florida currently stands as one of just eight NCAA Division II teams that are unbeaten and untied on the season.
Urbancic heating up
Junior
Marteinn Urbancic has played a pivotal role in the Argonauts offense thus far, recording a point in four consecutive games. Urbancic scored his first goal of the season in double-overtime against Spring Hill, a goal that secured a 1-0 victory over the Badgers last Thursday. Urbancic would score again the following game against Mobile in a 2-0 victory.
Rotating netminders
Junior
Andre Moreira and sophomore
Jacob Murray have been rotating time in net so far this season. Moreira currently leads the Gulf South Conference in save percentage amongst qualifying goalkeepers at .800. Murray has posted shutouts in both of his games, first against Southern Nazarene, and most recently against Spring Hill last week. The Argonauts' backline has certainly supported Murray, as only three shots on goal have been accumulated by the opposition in Murray's 190:26 of action. The Argos' shutout percentage of .600 is good for ninth best in the nation and tops in the GSC.
Scouting Union
Union currently stands at 2-4, with most recently dropping a home contest to Upper Iowa, 2-1. Union also begins its Gulf South Conference schedule on Friday in this contest, although Union previously fell to Christian Brothers earlier in the season, 2-1. Andre Silva leads the team with two goals and one assist.
Scouting Christian Brothers
At No. 10, UWF faces its highest ranked opponent since last year's match up with a No.9-ranked Saint Leo team on September 21, 2014. Christian Brothers has started off the season 7-0, and plays Spring Hill on Friday night before hosting West Florida. Britton McGuire has patrolled the Buccaneers' net, only letting in an average of 0.77 goals per game. Samuel Wilson leads the offensive attack with six goals and two assists.
