September 25, 2015 JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team suffered a defeat at the hands of Union University on Friday night by the score of 2-1. The loss marks the first loss of the season for West Florida and now puts the team at 5-1 on the season and 0-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while the Bulldogs improve to 3-4 and win its GSC opener.
Freshman
Kameron Bethell (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) got the West Florida offense rolling early in the first half, collecting a free kick outside the 18 yard box and putting it past the keeper in the top right corner of the net. The Argonauts were persistent in its defensive pressure, not allowing a shot on goal from the Bulldogs' offense for the entire first half.
In the 53
rd minute, Bulldogs forward Amadeu Guimaraes scored on a dish from Paul Langford to even the score at 1-1. Roughly two and a half minutes later, Guimaraes scored another goal on a bicycle kick to give Union the one-goal advantage.
West Florida led in shots on goal, 5-4, with also holding an advantage in corners having three in comparison to Union's two. Bethell and senior
Jorge Chirinos (Tampa, Fla./Leto HS) each had two shots to lead the Argonauts offense.
Junior
Andre Moreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Colegio de A a Z) saved two shots in his effort in net as his record moves to 3-1 on the season.
West Florida remains in Tennessee until Sunday, when the Argonauts continue GSC play and face a fellow top 20-ranked team in No.10-ranked Christian Brothers at 3:00 p.m.
