September 27, 2015 MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team handed the No. 10-ranked Christian Brothers team its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, sinking the Buccaneers' by a score of 4-1. West Florida improves to 6-1 on the year and evens its Gulf South Conference mark to 1-1, while Christian Brothers falls to 8-1 and 1-1 in the GSC. The win for the Argos gives the program its first triumph against a top 10 nationally-ranked opponent since it defeated Lynn on September 25
th, 2010.
Just 14 seconds before the halftime whistle,
Kameron Bethell was set up for a free kick outside the 18-yard box and drilled it over the Christian Brothers wall of defenders and into the right half of the net for a 1-0 Argonauts lead. The West Florida backline did not allow a shot on goal for the entire first half of play.
UWF would come back from the halftime break ready to burst offensively, as the Argos would collect three second half goals on six second-half shots. Senior
Felipe Oliveira (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway HS) would get things started in the 51
st minute, scoring his second goal of the season. Junior
Marteinn Urbancic (Reykjavik, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) would collect his third goal in his last four games, extending the Argonauts lead to 3-0, before freshman
Stephen Enderlin (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic High School for Boys) scored the fourth and final goal for West Florida. Enderlin's goal, his fourth of the season, now gives him sole possession of the team lead and GSC lead amongst all freshmen in the conference.
Senior
Jorge Chirinos (Tampa, Fla./Leto HS) contributed the lone assist of the afternoon, as he set up Urbancic for his third goal of the season.
Shortly after the Enderlin goal, Christian Brothers registered its first and only goal of the afternoon, coming from CBU senior Samuel Wilson.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jacob Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Seminole Ridge HS) was supported by defenders
Michael Starkey (Huddersfield, England/Newsome HS),
Andrew Hitt (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside HS),
Allan Kuhne (Honolulu, Hawaii/Boca Raton Community HS), and
Soren Yuhaschek (Orlando, Fla./Freedom HS) as the UWF backline only allowed the one shot on goal from the Christian Brothers' attack. Murray remains undefeated with a 3-0 record in net on the season and has only allowed one goal in 280 minutes of play.
West Florida is back in action this upcoming weekend, when it plays Lee on Friday night at 7:30 and Shorter on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
