September 5, 2015 PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team defeated Tampa in its opening night efforts on Saturday. The team begins its 2015 campaign with a 1-0 start while Tampa drops its first contest of the season and falls to 1-1.
Tampa got off to a quick start, as Nikolai Hammer had an open shot on the left side and put Tampa up 1-0 in the fifth minute. The game would stay a 1-0 Spartans lead for the remainder of the first half.
Freshman
Kameron Bethell (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) got a quick start to his collegiate career, collecting a rebounded save from the goalie and burying a shot into the back of the net for his first goal and knotting the score at 1-1 in the 49
th minute. West Florida was able to secure the win due to senior
Felipe Oliveira (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway HS) seeing a pathway to an empty net and softly putting one away in the 58
th minute and giving the Argonauts a 2-1 advantage.
In net for West Florida, junior
Andre Moreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Colegio de A a Z) saved eight of nine shots, while his counterpart in the Tampa net Christian Knight stopped two Argonauts shots. Tampa ended the game with 17 shots, with nine on target, while West Florida attacked with nine shots and four being on target.
The Argonauts are back in action on Monday for a Labor Day contest against Southern Nazarene at 3:00 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Complex.
