Katie Bobos and
Alex Coyne led four players in double figures as the West Florida women's basketball team won its second-straight over a ranked team, defeating #13/14 Union, 75-67, at Fred DeLay Gymnasium
on Saturday.
UWF (7-4, 5-2 Gulf South Conference) led by as many as 18 early in the second quarter and had to fend off a late rally by Union (11-2, 5-2), who lost for the first time at home in seven games this season.
The Argos extended their season-best win streak to four games and have won seven of nine after starting the year with back-to-back losses the opening weekend of play.
Bobos had 18 points, nine rebounds and one crucial blocked shot in the final minute to help preserve the lead. Coyne finished with 16 points and had a career-high four 3-pointers. She also handed out seven assists, marking the ninth time in the last 10 she has totaled as many.
Jasmine Wigfall had 10 of her 14 in the second half, including 6 of 7 at the foul line.
Toni Brewer finished with 12 off the bench.
UWF shot 44 percent in the game and outrebounded Union 44-38.
Union entered the game ranked 15th in the country in field goal shooting at 47 percent but was held to just 37 percent – its third lowest in 13 games this season. Tiara Caldwell led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points.
The Argos came out on fire in the opening quarter, scoring 18-consecutive points to claim an 18-2 lead with
4:32 on the clock. UWF scored on 10-straight possessions during the run, which included two offensive rebounds that resulted in second chance scores. The team was 12 of 17 from the floor for 71 percent and claimed a 28-12 lead.
The shooting cooled for both teams in the second period. Union trimmed the margin to nine points at 36-27 with just over two minutes on the clock, before UWF responded with a 7-0 run to get the lead back into double figures. A 3-pointer by the Lady Bulldogs at the buzzer sent the teams into the locker room with UWF holding a 43-30 edge.
Union cut the UWF advantage to 45-35, but the Argonauts responded with seven unanswered for another run halting stretch. A
Jasmine Wigfall 3-point play gave UWF a 54-38 lead with
5:12 left in the third. The Lady Bulldogs battled back and forced a UWF timeout following a Kelsey Risner triple that cut the lead to 56-48.
UWF saw its lead dwindle to 66-65 at the
2:10 mark of the game. Coyne responded with a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the shot clock to make it a two possession game at 69-65. The Argos played tough defense and held the Lady Bulldogs scoreless, forcing them to foul. Wigfall made four freebies before Bobos blocked an outside attempt by Risner before being fouled on the rebound.
UWF will return to play
on Monday night at Christian Brothers (4-6, 2-4). Tip-off at Canale Arena is set for
5:00 p.m. with the men's teams playing after the women's game.
