HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – West Florida sophomore
Toni Brewer had 21 points and eight rebounds in her return to her hometown on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as UWF fell to Alabama Huntsville 68-65 in overtime at Spragins Hall before a national television audience.
Brewer, who was saddled with foul trouble in the opening two quarters, had 15 points and seven rebounds after halftime. The Huntsville native has averaged 17 points and 11.3 rebounds in four career games against the Chargers.
UWF (11-6, 9-4 Gulf South) shot just 38 percent and was outrebounded – 34-31 – for the first time in four games.
Junior
Katie Bobos had 18 points and five rebounds, while junior
Alex Coyne added 11 points, nine assists and three steals.
UAH (11-6, 8-5) was led by Dina Saunders with 14 points and five rebounds. The Chargers shot 47 percent and were 4 of 5 in overtime/
The Argos led 14-12 after the first quarter and 29-28 at the half, but their three primary post players – Brewer,
Courtney Meyer and
Kelly Preston – all had three fouls.
UAH took a sizeable lead in the third quarter, capping a 15-1 run with 3-pointers from Josi Saunders and Baylee Johnson for a 43-33 lead with just under four minutes to play. UWF cut the deficit to four at the quarter and eventually took the lead with 7:03 in the fourth on a Coyne steal and fast break layup.
UWF stretched its lead to six later in the period but UAH closed regulation on an 8-2 run to force the extra session.
The Argos scored the first three points in overtime from the foul line before the Chargers scores six-consecutive to take the lead for good. After cutting the deficit to two on a Brewer jumper with 28 seconds to play, UAH made just one of two free throws with 9.1 left to give the Argos a chance to tie the game.
Unfortunately,
Katie O'Neal's three from the right wing was off target and caromed off the rim as time expired.
UWF will return home on Thursday to face Lee (13-5, 10-3) at the UWF Field House. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
