January 9, 2015 PENSACOLA, Fla. – A well-balanced attack from the University of West Florida women's basketball team paved the way for the Argos to defeat the University of West Alabama, 63-54 at the Field House on Saturday afternoon. With the win, West Florida wins its sixth consecutive contest, which marks as the longest win streak for UWF women's basketball since the 2005-06 season.
West Florida (9-4, 6-2 GSC) started the game off jumping to a 6-0 lead before the first media timeout and led by as many as 11 in the first half. UWF benefited from notable first half efforts by
Belle Bistrow (eight points),
Courtney Meyer (five rebounds),
Toni Brewer (six points, five rebounds) and
Alex Coyne (five points, five assists).
Katie O'Neal also contributed six first-half points as the freshman went 2-3 from long range in the first 20 minutes.
West Florida built its largest lead of the game in the last two minutes of the third quarter, as Brewer converted on a jumper after a pass from
Kelly Preston with 1:41 remaining in the third quarter. Preston recorded a steal against West Alabama guard Ariel Wilson and would grab an offensive rebound on the ensuing possession and converted on the second chance opportunity to give the Argos a 56-38 lead. A pair of successful free throws from Brewer would give UWF the 20-point lead heading into the third quarter.
West Florida was led in scoring by Brewer, who posted 14 points while reeling in eight rebounds. Brewer was perfect from the free throw line, as the sophomore went 8-8 from the charity stripe. In her first college start, Bistrow was able to contribute 13 points and lead UWF with three successful three-pointers. Coyne added nine points and seven assists, while Meyer grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Katie Bobos posted her eighth consecutive double digit scoring performance with 11 points against UWA.
The West Florida defense did not allow a single West Alabama three pointer, as the Tigers went 0-4 from beyond the arc. UWF made the most of its long-range opportunities, as the Argos shot a season-best 47.1% from long range. Although UWA was able to outrebound UWF, the Argos held a vast advantage in turnovers, only committing six in comparison to UWA's 18.
West Alabama (5-8, 2-7 GSC) now suffers its third consecutive setback. Wilson led the Tigers with 12 points, as UWA was able to shoot 44.6% from the floor.
West Florida now looks towards another home GSC contest, as the Argos will host West Georgia on Monday at 2:00 p.m. The game will follow with the UWF-UWG men's basketball contest.
