PENSACOLA, Fla. – With another scoreless 90 minutes from the defense, the University of West Florida women's soccer team took a 4-0 win over Alabama Huntsville on Friday evening. The Argonauts improved to 12-3 overall and 9-0 in the Gulf South Conference with the victory.
The UWF defense posted its sixth consecutive shutout and its 11th of the year with the victory. Both marks land the current team in the top 10 for a single-season in GSC history. The Argonauts have also gone 564 consecutive minutes without a goal, which is the sixth-longest such streak in conference history.
Senior forward
Kaley Ward scored twice and added an assist in the game, giving her a league-leading 11 on the season, and freshman
Marjorie Boilesen scored a goal and assisted on Ward's first. Boilesen, who leads the GSC in total points (30), assists (12) and game-winning goals (4), scored once and assisted on Ward's first goal.
The game marked the second time in Ward's UWF career that the striker scored multiple goals in a game, following her hat trick against then-No. 1 Rollins last year.
West Florida also got help from
Leonie Kreil, who scored her third goal of the year with
Kayla Douglas' first career assist.
Sara Helgadottir assisted on Ward's second goal of the night, giving the Grindavik, Iceland, native 10 assists on the year. With Helgadottir's assist, UWF now has two players with double-digit assists for the first time since 2010.
Helgadottir's helper also moved her into a tie for fifth in career assists in the UWF record books, with 28. Her 10 assists are a career high.
UWF outshot the Chargers 25-2 on the day, and the Argonauts have allowed only nine total shots and three shots on goal in the last five games combined.
West Florida hosts West Alabama on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Complex.
