PENSACOLA, Fla. – Emily Vogler netted her first career multi-goal game,
Kaljit Atwal garnered three assists and the University of West Florida defense pitched its seventh consecutive shutout in a 4-0 Senior Day win over West Alabama on Sunday afternoon. The Argonauts stayed on top of the Gulf South Conference, moving to 10-0, and improved their record to 13-3.
The West Florida defense moved up in the conference's all-time record books with its dominant performance on Sunday. The team's seven consecutive shutout are the second-most by a GSC team in a single season, just behind nine shutouts in a row from the 2003, 2007 and 2008 UWF teams. The shutout was the 12th for the team this year, which is the sixth-most in conference history, and the stretch of 654 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal ranks eighth in GSC lore.
West Florida still has not allowed a goal in conference play and has not allowed a single goal in the month of October. The team has also not allowed more than five shots in a single game this month.
Vogler picked up her league-leading fourth game-winning goal in the fourth minute after cleaning up a touch from
Marjorie Boilesen after a
Sara Helgadottir free kick. With the helpers, Boilesen and Helgadottir extended their conference leads in assists on the year. The senior Helgadottir ranks second in the GSC with 11 assists and now has sole possession of fifth place in the UWF record books with 29 career assists. Boilesen, a freshman, leads the conference with 13 assists and 31 points, and she has scored at least one point in 14 of her 15 career games.
Senior
Kaley Ward moved into the lead in the conference with her 12th goal of the season, with assistance from fellow senior
Alisa Festagallo, who put in the cross, and Atwal. Ward now has 21 goals in her UWF career, giving her the most among all active GSC players over the last two years.
Atwal notched her second assist of the day on a cross to
Leonie Kreil in the 64th minute, before Vogler struck again in the 81st minute with her seventh goal of the year. Atwal earned her third assist of the day and her sixth of the year after delivering a corner kick to Vogler, who headed it in.
Vogler performed admirably on the defensive side as well, marking West Alabama's TeMia Pride for much of the game. Pride did not get a single shot off in the 90-minute contest, despite ranking third in the GSC with 10 goals and fifth in the conference in shots per game.
Goalkeeper
Katelyn Burkhart recorded two saves on the day and stretched her record to 12-1 on the year. Burkhart has played a part in 11 shutouts this season for UWF.
With just two conference games left on the year, West Florida has clinched a spot in the GSC Tournament. The Argos are the only team to have made an appearance in every single GSC Women's Soccer Tournament.
UWF will be back in action on Thursday against Mississippi College and Saturday against Delta State to wrap up the regular-season GSC schedule on the road.
